The first thought that came to mind when reviewing this week’s sales was ‘Sotheby’s sure had great timing with their entry into the Calgary market.’
Nine more homes sold for over $1M in the past couple days, including three more condominiums. One of the condo sales was a new townhome which sold above asking by $30,000 for $1,025,000.
Month-to-date, 63 homes have sold for $1M or more which surpasses the previous March record of 60 set in 2007. The all-time monthly record was set in May 2012 with 80 luxury home sales.
Calgary has the largest number of head offices per 100,000 population in the country and had the largest employment growth in those offices according to a report released yesterday by Statistics Canada. (Source: Calgary Herald, March 26, 2013) While the statistics reflect 2011 figures, it helps underscore why the high-end market has been so active the last few years.
Of no surprise is today’s Stats Can release on January’s payroll figures: Alberta continued to have the highest average weekly earnings at $1,090, up 3.6% from the previous year. (Source)
